In this presentation we discussed the basics of communication and the notion of active listening. Many people with social anxiety, loneliness or shyness might feel they need to improve their skills in this area. There are other presentations that go into active listening and communication in various settings. This is an overview of active listening.
It must be understood that it is important to practice self-compassion. This means that as a shy person or someone with social anxiety, it might be hard to listen and not let our own thoughts get in the way. We might ahve trouble focusing.
This presentation includes information on techniques such as summarizing, paraphrasing, clarifying. We discuss how to listen the emotional content of what is said.
This was also framed in terms of the situation. For example, if we are trying to offer support we might want to determine whether or not the person just wants you to listen.
